Choose a first conversion that reflects useful progress

Match the action you measure to the buyer’s stage and the business’s ability to follow through.

A conversion event is useful when it represents an action the business understands. A visitor requesting a scoped audit, asking a technical question, and opening a general newsletter are at different points in a decision. Treating all three as equivalent leads can hide whether the program is attracting the right audience.

Start by describing the next useful step for the reader. Then ask whether the business can respond in a way that moves that decision forward. A form should not promise a consultation if no one owns the follow-up.

Define quality before reporting volume

For an enquiry, a simple review might distinguish relevant, unclear, and out-of-scope requests. Record why a request falls into a category. Do not silently classify an expensive project as better if the business cannot deliver it, or a smaller project as worse if it fits the product well.

Consider an illustrative month with 40 forms and another with 25. The second month may be more useful if substantially more requests fit the actual service. Report the counts and definitions before making that judgment. A changing qualification rule can create an apparent improvement that comes from classification rather than audience change.

Keep the path observable

Give the next-step page a clear promise and ensure the follow-through matches it. Ask the team receiving enquiries which information helps them respond, then request only the context that serves that purpose. Additional fields should earn their place.

Review the first conversion beside later progression. A useful early signal should help the team learn before a sale occurs, while remaining distinct from a sale. If it no longer provides that information, revise the signal and document the change so historical comparisons remain understandable.
