Handoff an SEO audit so the work actually starts

Turn findings into implementation tickets with ownership, evidence, and acceptance criteria.

An audit can explain what is wrong and still leave the implementation team unsure what to do. “Improve internal linking” does not identify the affected pages, the intended reader path, or a way to determine that the change is complete. The handoff should translate the finding into a bounded action.

Start with the highest-priority findings that your team can realistically address. A long list of unassigned recommendations is less useful than a short queue with clear owners and the evidence they need. This checklist describes a working process; it does not predict a search outcome.

Create a complete ticket

  • Problem: the specific condition and why it matters to the reader or business.
  • Evidence: affected URLs, an example, and the date observed.
  • Proposed change: the smallest useful correction or investigation.
  • Owner: the person responsible for delivery, plus the reviewer.
  • Dependencies: access, product facts, design decisions, or engineering work.
  • Acceptance criteria: what can be directly checked after implementation.
  • Outcome review: the later business or search signal to observe.

Acceptance and outcome are separate. A page can be correctly updated today while its longer-term effect remains uncertain.

Example: a missing implementation explanation

Suppose the audit finds that a product page promises easy setup but gives no explanation. A useful ticket asks for a section describing prerequisites, responsibilities, and the actual setup sequence, reviewed by the team that performs the work. It identifies the page and the exact location where the answer belongs.

Acceptance means the approved explanation is visible, accurate, and reachable from the relevant decision path. The later review might examine qualified engagement and sales feedback. It would not define success as “rank first,” because that is neither an implementation check nor an outcome the team fully controls.

Run a short handoff review

Ask each owner to explain the proposed change back in their own words. Different interpretations often reveal missing details before work begins. Resolve disagreements about scope and priority in the ticket so the author does not become the only person holding the context.

When a finding is deferred, record why and what would change the decision. An unavailable dependency is different from a low-value recommendation. Review the queue regularly, close completed work with evidence, and keep unresolved measurement questions visible without reopening correctly completed implementation.

For the next implementation step, use Technical SEO checks before a product launch.
